Day 96 -- Hamlin Tour

Today I took Carol and Dave over to Stamford and Hamlin for a stroll down memory lane.  I found out my memory wasn't all that good and I couldn't find some of the old places that I wanted to show them!  First, I realized I couldn't remember how to get to the last home that our grandmother lived in in Stamford.  But I did drive them by where Aunt Gay and Uncle Jack live and where Kelly used to live and now lives.  Then we were off to Hamlin to seek out some places from our memories as children.  First stop was the Hamlin cemetery where we drove up and down each lane until we found our grandparents' graves.  Looked for our great-grandparents but somehow missed them.

After that we drove out to the old home place where they lived on the farm and we had lots of fun cousin visits.  The house has burned to the ground and whoever owns it now has used it mostly for a place to dump junk.  There was a sign up that said the "compound" was under surveillance which I didn't get a photo of but Carol did--what there would be worthy of guarding there is a question I can't answer.  We drove on down the road to where our great-grandparents lived and it is just a field now so we couldn't pinpoint the exact location.  But we certainly could pinpoint the many memories we have from being at that old farmhouse.

Next we drove back into town to look for the the house our grandparents moved to when they left the farm and we believe that we found it--much run-down but still standing.  Then we went by the house our grandmother lived in after our grandad died which was easy to find.

As we left Hamlin, we drove back to Haskell via Old Glory through that rugged country that is so pretty in a snaky kind of way.  We stopped at the historical marker there which I had never seen and also took a picture of the old store.
