Day 103 -- Lots of Candles, Plenty of Cake

Tonight I just finished reading an amazing book that I could not put down--Lots of Candles, Plenty of Cake by Anna Quindlen.  I have read some of her novels in the past and have thought she was a good writer.  But this is not a novel--it is called a memoir--I would say somewhat memoir and a lot more essay on observations on life, and it was a profound read for me.  Anna and I happen to be about the same age--and she wrote this book looking back on her life as well as thinking forward to her aging years and however much life that entails.  I felt like I could have been writing this book only not so eloquently--she put into beautiful prose thoughts that I have, worries that I experience, memories that I have from growing up--and she lives in NYC and I grew up in Haskell!  It is a beautiful piece of writing with wit and wisdom which were great, and some liberalism and agnosticism which I couldn't quite relate to, but overall a great read for me.  It is a book that should speak to women of all ages because of the various topics she discusses but especially those of us around my age as she explores all the amazing changes we have seen in our lives from our childhood up to our present.  I will have to read it again and again--maybe just in parts because some of the them were so thought-provoking.  Five starts from me--but you can't have my book; you will have to get your own!
I will tell you that I found this book for $4 at a Dollar Store here in town.
