On Monday the 17th, Avis flew in from Dallas but she didn't arrive until 8:30 or so, and Bill suggested that we spend the day sightseeing in Boston while waiting for her. He was the driver so I said fine, and I think about an hour in, he was regretting his suggestion. Traffic is horrendous in this city and roads come in at all angles, turn crazy and of course parking is EXPENSIVE. Our first stop was down by the water where Old Ironsides is dry-docked. That was cool to see--we did not do the interior tour because we didn't want to be below decks with that many people! The area was beautiful but congested as this was part of the Freedom Trail which Boston has kindly marked out for tourists to follow for a walking tour of the historical sites. We found a Legal Oysteria ( part of the Legal Seafood group) there and Bill can never pass up fresh oysters so that is where we had lunch--I had a heavenly crab cake with no filler--only crab.

After that we decided to leave that area so moved to the Faneuil Hall area which is considered the birthplace of our Independence as men gathered to begin the process of breaking from England. It is still used as a lecture hall today and is owned by the National Park Service. I sat and listened to a park ranger tell the history of the building. Across from this hall, are old buildings that have been transformed into a walking mall with hundreds of stores and restaurants and gift shops. Bill found a place outside Garadelli Chocolate store and had some ice cream while I browsed a bit. That got tiring so we got the car out of the parking garage and drove around a bit more, but it was just a hardship trying to drive in the traffic. In the meantime, we got word from Avis that her plane would be delayed until 9:10 so we found a little Italian place near the airport and ate dinner. Then went down the street to a Marriott Courtyard where we had reservations for Friday night, and sat in there and had a drink and whiled away the time until we went to the airport. All-in-all, it was a hard day in many ways and really got Bill down for the rest of the trip I think. Once we gathered up Avis and luggage, we had a two-hour drive back to our condo so it was a long night.
