As you know, I've gone to a few group nutritional talks with this sweet girl Hayley Constance who is a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner. She is the one that recommended the "Why Stomach Acid is Good for You" book which made me realize I had to get off these acid blocker medications I've been taking for nearly 20 years. So I hired her for a private consultation which started with her sending me a lot of forms to fill out with my lifestyle, history, goals, etc. for nutrition and then keeping a food diary for a time. She then took that information and created recommendations for me for first, getting off the acid blockers and the second eating healthier and "cleaner". This morning was my consultation with her and she gave me a lot of information and suggestions. But she also kept it real in that she wanted me to realize that getting off in the weeds from time to time whether with sugar, other carbs, etc. wasn't the end of the world--everyone has to have special meals and times when the rules are relaxed.
The thing I was most interested in was getting off the acid blockers without feeling like I was going to die from reflux. She gave me a sheet on weaning-off of them and things to avoid while doing so. She also gave me suggestions for stomach healing nutrients to take daily in the form of supplements. The ones she thinks will work best for me are bone broths, deglycerized licorice, marshmallow root and a collagen supplement which helps heal the stomach lining as well as lots of skin, hair and nail bonuses and ligament support.
She is going to arrange for me to have a food sensitivities (MRT) as well because she says we are often sensitive to food that don't actually make us sick but do give us side affects and inflammation that we would feel better without. She also recommends no caffeine and alcohol to help repair the LES (the valve that is supposed to shut tight to keep aside from back flowing into the esophagus. She wants me to get tested for H. Pylori to make sure there is no issue with that in the stomach which can grow when there is not enough acids in the stomach to kill it off.
I am to avoid refined carbs, excessive amounts of raw veggies, black tea tannins. She said it can take 4-8 weeks to fully wean off the medication at which time I would then start taking Hydrochloric Acid/Enzyme supplements with meals until the stomach gets up to speed on making its own again.
It sounds kind of complicated, but when we have no acid in our stomachs, the food goes right on through and nutrients are not extracted as they are supposed to be in the stomach and gut so we are eating with no resultant nutritional value.
