Day 44 -- Runaway Father-in-Law
We are in the process of settling my father-in-law BG into our lake house. He is glad to be moving out there and away from the problems where he was living. However, there are so many things that he does not seem to understand, and the first would be how to find the place! This morning I went to his house to take him with me to the apartment to pack up some things in his pickup and my car to bring back to the lake--and so I drove him back to the apartment, pointing out major landmarks for his turns etc. We got a lot packed up in both our vehicles, and then I told him to follow me back to the lake in his pickup. He said he was afraid of getting lost, but I told him that if he followed me, he wouldn't get lost--oh, how naive I am! We took off at a snail's pace, and I made sure that I was the car directly in front of him. And yet, he decided to exit when clearly I had not done so, so I had to take the next exit and try to get back to him--and I was able to do so. I was in front of him again, and we were doing great until we got to Hwy 317 which we were going to go over--and I did--but he exited onto 317. By the time I could get turned around and back to where he exited, I had no idea if he had gone left or right. He wears a locator around his neck, so I pulled over and called Bill and asked him to use the app to locate him. Well, it couldn't. So he called the company, and they couldn't find him although it said his battery was good and he had it on. By this time about 20 minutes had gone by, and he was going farther and farther somewhere--but where? Bill was at the lake, so he started driving and then headed north on 317 towards McGreger while I drove through Belton to the interstate and drove back to his apartment. Neither of us found him--he was not at the apartment when I got there. So Bill called 911 and asked for a silver alert on him giving them the information about the vehicle, etc. It was by then about 1:00. He finally showed up at his apartment about 2:15 on his own. That was so scary. The worst part was that while I was looking for him, a police car with lights and sirens went by, and I decided I should follow just in case, and came up on a wreck of a pickup on its side in the road. All I could see was the bottom of it until I got up even with the tailgate to see that it wasn't him. Teenagers didn't give me this kind of stress! So, end of story is that he is back at the lake, without his pickup,, and we are moving all his furniture in the morning. Still trying to decide what to do about the pickup issue. Also, he keeps telling me that whoever lived in that lake house before, left a lot of stuff in it and if I want any of it, I can have it! I can not make him understand it IS mine--and I don't want him giving anything away to anybody! Geeez--
