Day 308 -- First day in Santa Fe

We drove through some pretty, yet barren land between Clovis and Santa Fe, but one interesting site we found was a ghost town and this cool abandoned building which was either a church or school or both at one time.  We decided it was definitely a "fixer-upper".  Wonder what Chip and Joanne would do with this!

We arrived in Santa Fe early afternoon and got checked into our great hotel--Hotel Santa Fe--which is unique in that it is the only hotel there owned by the native Indians.  It was very nice.

After getting into our rooms, we jumped back in the car to go to the historic downtown area to look around and see what we could see.  We visited the oldest church and house in Santa Fe and also the church that has the spiral unsupported staircase.  They were all very interesting.  I had seen the staircase before but the others hadn't.  The oldest house was across the street from oldest church and only two rooms remain of the original structure.

This old bell says 1386 on it I believe.  If you ring it (with a mallet)
it guarantees you will return to Santa Fe some day.

When first built, there were no rails--
just stairs.

After a rest at the hotel we went out to eat at Estavan's which was a lovely small upstairs restaurant where we were met by the owner and ushered to our table.  Three of us feasted on local trout and it was wonderful!
