Day 220 -- Social Satire
For many years of teaching senior English, I taught a good deal of social satire because English literature is full of it--A Modest Proposal being probably my favorite. But then there's Huck Finn, Brave New World, Fahrenheit 451, The Chosen, The Handmaid's Tale, Lord of the Flies. Tonight, again on Roku, I watched a social satire movie called The Circle, which I had never heard of, but which stars Tom Hanks and a young girl actress I'm sure my girls know the name of but I can't remember now. I thought it was a great movie and so appropriate to our times--the complete loss of privacy is the premise and the target of the satire. I recommend it, it for no other reason than to remember every time we leave our mark on a web page or walk through the streets of most any cities, or use our credit card, or shop in any store, someone is watching and through that we are tracked.
